Herd Managment
At Lazy S Ranch, herd management is the backbone of our breeding program. Every decision — from cow selection to bull development — is made with longevity, fertility, and real-world performance in mind. Our approach blends nearly 60 years of experience with proven management practices that prioritize function over fads.
Calves are born moderate, vigorous, and thrifty. Birth weights are recorded. We do not creep feed calves to create artificial weaning weights. Instead, calves are raised on milk and grass, allowing natural growth and sound development. Our cows are easy fleshing on pasture, reinforcing our belief that easy-keeping cows produce easy-keeping bulls.
After weaning, bulls are developed on a high-roughage growing ration designed to develop muscle, structure, and durability — not excess fat. This ensures bulls are athletic, sound, and capable of transitioning smoothly into commercial environments.
The Lazy S cow herd is the pride of the ranch and the foundation of our success. Replacement heifers are retained annually from the top end of the program and must meet strict criteria for disposition, feet and legs, udder quality, fertility, structure, and fleshing ability. Open cows are culled annually, allowing us to maintain a fertile, productive, and highly consistent cow herd.
Over the past sixth and a half decades, Lazy S Ranch has marketed more than 6,500 bulls to customers from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island and into the United States. This disciplined management approach allows us to produce bulls that consistently deliver value — from calving ease and pasture performance to feedlot efficiency and carcass merit.
